Beautiful and unique New Zealand is consisted of two islands: North Island and South Island and several smaller. South Island has the high snow covered mountain peaks, but North Island remains volcanically active. The total area of New Zealand is 270,535 sq Km.

Around 950 AD the Maori tribes arrived from Polynesia and settled in the northern part of the North Island. Abel Janszoon Tasman, a Dutch sailor, was the first European that visited New Zealand in December 1642. In 1769-70 Captain James Cook reached this land. The first European settlements were offshoots of the American and Australian whaling industry from 1790 onwards. In 1839 - 1841, New Zealand was a part of the New South Wales colony. After long fighting, in 1860 British troops overcame Maori resistance to the British administration and land use. In 1907 New Zealand became a dominion of the British Empire and in 1931 it was granted autonomy by the Statute of Westminster, which was formally accepted in 1947.
